Cultural experiences are aplenty at the Kampung Seterpa homestay
programme, beginning with a roaring welcome to the beat of the gedombak panjang
drums, writes ZALINA MOHD SOM. KAMPUNG Seterpa thinks big for its
homestay programme and its participants feel that a kompang welcome is just too
ordinary. The kompang, a shallow-framed
drum, plays a second fiddle to the beautiful beat of gedombak panjang, Siamese
drums that are not uncommon in Kelantan. This roaring rhythm of these
traditional drums makes energetic background music for stilt-walkers as they
escort homestay participants to the beautiful village. For guests coming in by train, the
grand welcome starts from the nearest train station, Wakaf Baru KTM Station,
which is just a 10-minute drive to the village. But the cultural show doesn´t stop
at the village entrance. Throughout the programme, there are plenty of cultural
activities, regardless of whether it´s a day trip, an overnighter or a 3D/2N
package. Days are spent in the padi fields
with activities like flying the wau (kite), painting batik, making kuih tepung
pelita or simply hitting the muddy water to catch ducks. After dinner with the host family,
participants will be served lively dikir barat and makyong performances. And as guests are served a supper
of glutinous rice and fried salted fish, the village youth offers reflexology
sessions for a small fee of RM10. All these offerings and the fact
that the village is only 16km from Kota Baru make Homestay Kampung Seterpa
worth experiencing. Details, email:
